Three Black Feminist Every Teen Should Know

Black feminist comes from patterns of discrimination such as race and gender. Most of the feminist aim to empower most black women. They also work on ideas to center how rasism and sexsim worked together to create Black women’s social issues and inequalities. Three black feminist every teen should know are Angela Davis, Anna Cooper, and Shirley Chisholm. Everyone has their own opinion on why it is important to celebrate black history month Eastside freshman A Miesya Brown says

Angela Davis

“Black women have had to develop a larger vision of our society than perhaps any other group. They have had to understand white men, white women, and black men. And they have had to understand themselves, When black women win victories, it is a boost for virtually every segment of society. “

Angela Davis is a political activist and author. She was born January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama. Davis became known in the early 1970’s for her politically charged murder case. She joined the Black Panther party as a young woman, which was an organization used to protect African American neighborhoods from police brutality. She knew about racial prejudice because she experience discrimination growing up in Alabama. She advocates gender, equality, prison reform, an alliance across color lines. As a teenager she tried to have study groups with both black and white but, they were broken up by the police. She also knew some of the four African American girls killed in the Birmingham church bombing in 1963.

Anna Cooper

“Let woman’s claim be as broad in the concrete as the abstract. We take our stand on the solidarity of humanity, the oneness of life, and the unnaturalness and injustice of all special favoritism, whether of sex, race, country, or condition.”

Anna Cooper was born a slave in August 10, 1858, in Raleigh, NC. She died February 27 ,1964 in Washington D.C. Anna was a black liberation activist. She was a major African American scholar to history. She became known because she was the fourth African American to earn a PHD. She graduated from the university of Sorbonne in 1924. She is also known for her book A Voice From the South, By a Black Woman in the South which educated black woman to uplift their race. One important fact is that she gave courage to the African Americans, from the end of slavery tilthe civil rights movement. Another important fact is that she was the only woman of any color to be quoted in the U.S passport.

Shirley was born November 30, 1924, in New York, NY. She died January 1, 2005 in Ormond Beach, Florida. She was known for becoming the first black congresswoman in 1968. She represented New York congressional district for seven terms. Chisholm also was the first woman to run for president for the democratic party. An important fact is that she became friends with her rival George Wallace who was known for racist acts, while he was in the hospital after his assassination attempt. Their friendship help Shirley get a bill pass through. Another important fact is that she focused on unemployment benefits for domestic workers and education initiatives.
