Chicken is your future?

It was a hot and humid day with absolutely no sign of anyone. Sumit was parched onto his 10 square feet tree house, in the middle of the slum in North Kolkata(India). Temperature was around 40 degree C, yet sweat would pour down his forehead every three minutes, which he kept wiping off with the sleeves of his shirt. He was hungry and not much to eat about. Wandering what to eat, he turned his eyes around his room, and landed himself upon a small notebook — a recipe book — which he had discovered during his last adventure. In it, was a recipe for “Honey Chicken” which he found interesting and brought water to his mouth. He needed a few ingredients, which would require him to go out and fetch in this sultry condition.

The recipe required around 200 grams chicken, two medium sized lemons (for making lemon juice), salt and pepper;

For the gravy — 6 tea spoons honey(for the gravy), two tea spoons corn flour, one teaspoon ginger and garlic paste, two teaspoon soya sauce, two eggs and two teaspoon vinegar.

The challenge was to gather such ingredients in these times — almost two years after the outbreak of the deadly virus — resources were pitifully tight, although the normalcy has started to limp back to the population. Still, the quest for eating a sumptuous lunch attracted Sumit so much that he became determined to gather and prepare the recipe that he just read through.

He gathered the long scarf and covered his face completely, just his eyes being visible. He climbed down his tree house and went along the narrow lane on to the main road — where the shops were located. Two out of three were closed — only one was open and there was quite a crowd around it. One shop to feed the entire locality. Sumit waited patiently near the shop until his turn came. He quickly blurted out the ingredient list — the spices, honey and eggs — and the shopkeeper, in his usual angry tone, gave him the full list. After paying for his purchase, Sumit made his way from the shop. The only ingredient left was chicken — which would be an expensive proposition at this time. Walking down the hot road, he arrived at the Dairy shop — which has started to house all livestock items along with dairy milk products. He looked around, checked his pocket and purchased around 200 grams of chicken which felt would be sufficient to cover lunch as well as dinner for that day.

Back in his place, he quickly marinated the chicken with lemon juice, salt and pepper for almost an hour. Meanwhile, he mixed the spices, sauce and honey in a container and prepared the gravy — slowly simmering in the gas. He also added a spoonful of cornflour to make the gravy a bit thick in nature and put it down to cool. Once done, he then added eggs and sprinkled corn flour on the chicken, and fried it in oil and low heat, until the chicken changed colour. he then looked for soft patches in the chicken and allowed it to further cook for five more mins. After that he added the ginger garlic paste in the frying pan, mixed it with the chicken and poured the gravy into it while stirring continuously with the wooden spoon that he had kept separately for preparing special dishes. Another 10 minutes more, he found the chicken just ready to savour. He finished by using the sesame seeds for garnishing the dish and gave a sigh of satisfaction when he tasted it — one of the best dishes so far in his life!
