Soccer in Colombia

If you have ever heard of Pablo Escobar, then you probably know who he is. But many people mistake Andres Escobar for his brother, even though the two are not related. Andres is famous soccer player, while Pablo is one of the biggest drug lords.

So how are the two connected? Well most of the time Pablo used soccer teams to launder money. This was very smart of him, because the police would never think of soccer teams laundering money. Soccer means everything to people in Columbia. It is a way to keep the community together and help them escape the worries of their lives. Pablo also wasn’t suspected of running a drug cartel, because he was loved by the community and he was running for government.

Escobar had soft spot for soccer as he loved the game growing up. He loved to play soccer and watch many football games. With all of the money that he brought in with selling drugs, he made many pitches. With all these fields that he was making, he met many players that would soon go on to play professionally. His brother Roberto also came up with a darker benefit of the soccer teams. He would use them to launder money. With turnstiles taking cash, they could easily declare far higher earnings than were made, often by a million dollars or more, and immediately clean the drug money. They could also do this with player transfers, adding up way more money than necessary. In the end Pablo was a very smart man using soccer and changing the way people in Colombia looked at the game forever.
