Pandemic Stories

In the decades that come and the question is posed;

Where were you during the pandemic of 2020?

Where were you when Ireland got locked down?

What did you do?

What was life like?

What stories will you tell?

I was reminded tonight of the Greek God of time,

Kairos son of Zeus measured time not in seconds, minutes and hours but in moments.

When you are asked;

Where were you during the pandemic of 2020?

Will the stories you tell be of your efforts to have your makeup just right and the lighting just so, for the office zoom call?

Will it be of the pains in your back,

from spending hours on end hunched over a laptop,

in a chair designed for only occasional use?

Or days lost in time, not knowing one day in the week from the next.

Or will it be the extra moments we have been graced with?

Moments to see the good around us,

to appreciate those in jobs previously unnoticed,

the smile on the nervous shop assistants’ face

or the wave from the postal worker,

who keeps us cocooners connected to the outside world.

Moments learning the ukulele

or coming up with #covidcreations

Moments we wouldn’t otherwise have had,

and maybe never will again.

Will your story be that you served your country as best as you could?

Did you stay in?

Keep your social distance?

And cheer on our essential workers?

Today we learned we’re facing more time in lock down.

It’s hard.

Very hard.

So here’s my thought for tonight;

As we look ahead to the next few days and weeks of lock down.

How about we think of the moments we can create,

so that when the time comes,

And we’re asked;

What did you do in the pandemic of 2020?

We’ll have great stories to tell.
