A Blueprint on How to Learn Just About Anything

There are different kinds of learnings people experience in their lifetime. The first is in school — teachers assign stuff to learn, then assign homework. College is basically the same, except the homework is harder.

After (or during) college most people join the workforce. There’s on-boarding to get to know the company, followed by hands-on time to learn their new role in that company.

The one thing people never learn how to do, however, is how to learn. I don’t mean acquire information. Every time you’re on social media you’re acquiring information. I mean effective learning. Taking acquired knowledge and turning into something useful. Getting to know about a thing so well we can teach it to others. How do you do that? Where do you start?

The only reason I was able to write that article was because earlier this year I spent time learning about finance so I could improve my situation. Now I’m going to share how I learned about finance.

The first to do is get specific on exactly what you want to learn, and why. To do that get clear on how you plan to use the information.

Finance, for example, is a giant category. If I’d gone in and tried to learn everything there is to know I would have been completely overwhelmed and given up. Instead, I set a goal: “I want to learn how to be financially free”. That’s very different from “How to trade in the Stock Market.” or “How to make money with property.” Both of those have to do with finance but they’re entirely different.

Another way to narrow down what you want to learn about is to identify what problem you’re solving for. I no longer want my livelihood dependant on an at-will company that could fire me without warning one Friday morning. I needed to learn what it takes to make enough money (consistency) to…
