Day 41

Morning workout for J-Dawg before she heads north to spend Easter weekend with family. (Meanwhile, Brownie is churning away a 10 minute TT on her trainer before she heads west to do the same.)

It’s a good morning not to be a soccer player. It feels good to be moving as they stand around working on formations and tactics in the half-light of a blustery March morning.

Down on the track it is 5 x 300 at goal 1500 pace (100 jog) followed by a Coleman Special 300 A.Y.G. (All You Got). Julia christened the workout “New Mid-D” as the whole thing (including warm-up and (very brief) cool down) comes it at four miles total.

Anna has some life-guarding business to attend to at 5:00 so she gets her run in during seventh hour. But before she escapes we go over our Thankful Thursdays and Fearless Fridays.

I am thankful for the fact that coaching is challenging. That each and everyday it presents me with reasons to learn and grow.

My Fearless Fail of the week is related. While it’s not a specific event it is the feeling at days end that I failed at coaching — or at least that I wasn’t as successful as I would have liked to be. That I could — should — have done a better job.

— This is not a plea for affirmantion, I say.

But they come in regardless.

— I appreciate it. But any meaningful pursuit is going to involve at least as much failure as it does success. It’s okay to acknowledge that. Success and failure are not mutually exclusive. Being a good coach doesn’t mean you don’t make a mess of things. Just like, good race/bad race, I love y’all regardless, doesn’t change the result.

If you are on the path toward mastery failures are the mile-markers along the way.

Bravery isn’t always loud. Sometimes it as quiet as the simple act of continuing to show up.
