What Will the Future of Digital Marketing Look Like?

It was the year 1984. The first online shopper made a purchase on the Tescos store. At the time it was difficult to conceive of things like Amazon or Shopify. As the decades passed and the internet grew, so did digital marketing. When businesses realized they can sell goods and services “online”, everything changed, and the world of digital marketing was born.

Digital marketing is about finding a place on the web and carving out your audience. Whether it’s an online store or not, the goal is still the same: Get more eyeballs on your page and get them to convert. This is when the almighty Google was born and helped bring the world to people’s PCs.

But soon it won’t be just about web pages. Digital marketing is about to get a lot different. The reason?

Technology is creating whole new spaces for marketers to find customers with augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence. People are watching much more video content than ever and social media engagement is being constantly improved and optimized.

Digital marketers must always look to new channels of exposure, while optimizing existing ones. Using augmented reality, virtual reality, overhauling social media interaction and analyzing your customer experience are all vital pieces to the digital marketing puzzle.

Virtual spaces are increasingly being looked at as marketing channels. Brands using virtual spaces have (virtually) unlimited freedom to position a product.

Augmented reality experiences are also going to be vital to relaying a brand to consumers, and this is already being utilized. Many ecommerce brands have usable AR experiences that let potential customers see a product in a different environment.

It’s not just about the brand-new thing on the block either. While VR and AR concepts are great, full mass adoption is just beginning. This means that there is happy medium where marketers can start by integrating different tech into their business strategy without going overboard.

“Traditional” digital marketing won’t go away any time soon. SEO, social media, and influencer marketing are still vital pieces to the puzzle. Technology still does what it does: advance.

This doesn’t mean digital marketing strategies such as landing page promotion and content writing are going away.

In 2023, speed and efficiency of use will be prime requisites for consumers when they shop online or are viewing a website.

As AI-driven and AR-based technology lifts off into the world of marketing, we are going to see people interact with brands in completely new and unexpected ways. This means that marketers must constantly rethink their design strategy going forward and do what they always do — adapt.
