Cold temperatures will affect the heat of the grill. Ceramic grills maintain heat quite well, while other options need more fuel to keep warm. In general, winter grilling consumes 50 percent more fuel than grilling in other months. Preheating will also take longer. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the grill to reach temperature.

In the winter, consider grilling foods that cook quickly, such as hot dogs, sausages, and fish. If you opt for steaks, choose thinner cuts, and pay close attention as they cook. Another option is low and slow barbecue in a smoker, which requires just a quick check every couple of hours.
