Composting 101

Buxton Hollow Farm in North Smithfield has made the practice of sustainable agriculture one of its core missions. Congressman Cicilline and I had the opportunity to visit the farm, where farm owner Frank Jacques introduced us to new ideas about organic composting and agricultural education.

Frank explained the ways in which Buxton Hollow Farm is committed to environmental health and sustainability. The farm’s primary product line consists of organic composts and compost tea, a liquid, non-chemical treatment that enhances the nutrient quality of soil. These products are developed using long-established agricultural knowledge and offer Rhode Island farmers and gardeners a local and environmentally friendly composting option.

The visit also included a discussion of the farm’s newest initiative: the Center for Sustainable Organic Agriculture (CFSOA). The goal of the CFSOA is to provide training and education in sustainable agriculture. Through community partnerships and a hands-on curriculum, the Buxton Hollow Farm’s team hopes to cultivate a new generation of environmentally-minded workers.

Both environmental stewardship and career and technical education programs are top priorities of mine. Buxton Hollow Farm is dedicated to advancing both, and I look forward to seeing their ongoing progress.
