Web3 vs. Web 3.0

When you explore the chaotic world of NFT twitter, you will notice the term “Web3” in almost every post. At first glance this term seems like a general tag of this latest technological marvel we are currently witnessing but there is more to it than meets the eye.

What is Web3?

In late 2014 co-founder of Ethereum, Gavin Wood, started a revolution when he coined the term, “Web3”. The main concept behind Web3 is simple, fight big-tech companies such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft etc. by creating a new version of the internet which would be completely decentralized. The first version of the internet, also known as Web1 was a very boring place to be. A read only wasteland lacking the personal touch of the end-user. Then came Web2, a much more happier place where users could not only read but also create the content they wished to see but user data in Web2 is owned and controlled by tech giants with evil agendas. This is where the desperate need for something new was made clear, a new internet. Web3 is the start of the revolution which aims to take back control from big-tech and put it back into the hands of ordinary individuals.

How Web3 will take back control:

Through the use of blockchain tech, decentralized storage and self-controlled identities, Web3 will grant users total control who gets to see or access their data.

What exactly is the blockchain?

The blockchain is a system of storing information in a way which would make it nearly impossible for it to be changed or stolen. Each transaction on the blockchain is verified by synchronous network of computer systems.

What is Web 3.0?

The one thing that the modern day internet lacks is the availability of consistent data. Web 3.0 aims to connect everything on the internet on a data-level. If you change something on one platform, that same change will not take effect across the board. This presents a problem for users who not only want control but also accuracy. Forgetting passwords for a single social media platform can drastically alter a persons social identity and how they are represented. This is what Web 3.0 aims to solve.

Through the use of Solid pod, user data will be stored in one central location. This would allow users to change their data only once. Users can also control who and what can gain access to their data. Through the use of a WebID, users can log into multiple applications without compromising the control over their privacy.

Both Web3 and Web 3.0 aim to bring forth a decentralized version of the internet where the end-user has control and does not have to rely on corporations. Though they may have not seem very different, Web3 will use blockchain technology to grant users empowerment and security over big-tech. While Web 3.0 will mainly use data interchange technology to grant users efficiency where it is needed the most.

In conclusion, the most important thing you should remember is this, Web3 is the decentralized web and Web 3.0 is the linked web. Both aiming to usher in a new age of the internet.
