Get! Reflection Blog Post

We decided to ask questions that revealed the emotional attachment vendors and company advocates had with the brand they represented at Get Downtown. We also tried to attach the theme of community involvement within our interviews. We did this by asking in each interview how local college students could be of assistance to these organizations while they are in the Lynchburg area.

This story has a strong community/local emphasis for many obvious reasons. Many local college students are not aware of organizations that need help from the youth. Especially within our generation, we are motivated by emotion and storytelling, so to share through an article what these organizations are all about and what their values are, it just may appeal to our demographic. This in turn will benefit our community since more young people are going to want to be involved in helping our area become a better place through these various non-profit organizations.

Something I learned is that you need to be outgoing and bold when looking for people to speak to. Being respectful and approaching people with ease instead of eagerness to attain quick information makes a huge difference. The interviewee will most likely feel more comfortable sharing.

Treating an interview more like a conversation will create a better outcome too. If there is no cohesiveness within the interaction you are making with someone during an interview, there isn’t much space for depth. With cohesiveness, follow up questions may reveal information that makes up for great article content.

Going straight up to people to ask them to be interviewed worked a lot better than just waiting for them to notice us. Most of the time, people at this event were busy interacting with visitors that it was hard to get their attention for a small and quick interview. Something I would do differently is interview people who were not so close to each other. I felt we stayed in one main area, but at least one of our interviews were further away from the other three.

It was different in the sense that I had to seek confirmation from my partner before going up to someone to interview. We both had to agree on who to speak to which may have lengthened the amount of time we were there, but honestly, we ran into zero problems. The entire night went smoothly, and we got what we needed to get done, done.
