Unboinking the FIO Testnet

Testnets are for testing things, but what happens if things don’t go as planned? Wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to “undo” the changes and try the process over again? Because it’s testnet, you can! :)

BACKGROUND
There are some major changes to some of the underlying functionality of the FIO chain, and as always, those changes are being tested in the Testnet environment before being deployed into the Mainnet chain. Some issues were identified with the Testnet upgrade process and were able to be resolved, but since the Testnet had already been “upgraded”, it was no longer a clean replica of the Mainnet. Therefore we were afraid it would not be a true 1:1 test of the upgrade process should we just re-run the upgrade with the Testnet it it’s current state.

SO NOW WHAT?
The initial discussions about the best course of action first started occurring in the Telegram @FIOTestnet channel and several options were presented and discussed, such as recreating a new clean Testnet chain, proceeding with the semi-upgrade current Testnet, and others. Ultimately the option of rolling back the Testnet chain to a point just before the upgrade started was the best option to keep existing applications/processes working but also allow the upgrade to be tested as accurately as possible. We then scheduled a call including all BPs and Devs to confirm the plan and review the general process to complete the rollback.

THE “UNDO” BUTTON
The process of rolling back a blockchain to a previous state is actually relatively easy as long as all BPs are in agreement and coordinate to relaunch the chain. The process consists of:

Once this process has been completed, the Testnet should now better match the upgrade environment expected during the Mainnet upgrade but also retain as much functionality as possible (vs. relaunching a new blank chain).

This is obviously not a fully exhaustive list of all steps related to the process but hopefully helps provide some insight on the work being done behind the scenes by the FIO BPs/Dev team as well as keep you up to date on the status of the project.
