The Knowledge Navigator

It is so interesting to see how a few people thought so differently about technologies. The clipping on the knowledge navigator contains technological solutions that were way advance for its time. If seen as an overview, the clipping has shown technologies which are currently a reality but not as sophisticated as portrayed in the clipping.

The most notable feature that the clipping shows is that of the voice assistant. It depicts the potential of the technology in a true sense. When compared to the technology we have right now regarding voice assistance, I will say we haven’t reached the potential that John Sculley envisioned for the product. I won’t say that the item was right or wrong because I think the answer to this will change as soon as we find new ways to make the current technologies better. The thing that stood out the most for me was how seamless was it for the user to interact with a product like this. In the clipping, the professor uses a lot of prosody in his speech which the computer recognizes very efficiently. In my opinion, John Sculley wanted to depict the perfect form of the products that he has envisioned.

The next thing that stood out for me was the use of a foldable touch screen interface. At the beginning of the clipping, the professor opens a book like a machine and gives it commands. They could have simply depicted a simple touch screen that does not fold open. It could have had a simple screen that can take commands but instead, they chose to go with the foldable touch screen to truly portray the brilliant ideas that John Sculley had.

There are many other aspects of the technologies shown in the video which are even still advance for today’s time. Tools like video merging and seamless data searches are a couple of them.

There was one more very interesting aspect of the voice assistant. We all now know that Apple’s Siri has a default voice of a woman whereas, in the demo, the assistant is portrayed as a male. Even the word Siri is a Norse name meaning a ‘beautiful woman who leads to victory’. I wonder what changed in Apple that made them make this decision.

Having a future vision that is so expansive and correct like John Sculley requires firm determination in the field you are working. The touch screen was invented around 1965 and a foldable screen / flexible screen was invented around 1974. The knowledge navigator is based on John Sculley’s book that he wrote in 1987. He kept himself updated with all the events happening around the globe related to his field. He analyzed the great potential different inventions might have in the future and tried his best to incorporate them into his products. A true visionary is not just about thinking big or thinking about the future, but it is also about actually taking the necessary steps to make your vision a reality.
