Blood out of the Stone

Do you ever get the feeling that writing is like milking blood out of a stone? If you don’t have a convincing message to sell, or a convincing story to tell, or if you’ve emptied the well, it can be a bit disheartening. I don’t know if it’s possible to empty the reservoir of creativity, but I currently feel like I have and I don’t know how to refill it.

There are plenty of articles out there giving you lists of “Top Ten ways to reignite your creativity,” or “Top Seven ways to follow my flawless guide to my own individual creative process which 100% works 50% of the time, have you purchased my book yet? Follow this link.” I find it interesting to see what advice people give because I don’t believe that the creative process is something which you can nail down to a formula. I believe that it’s subjective to each creator. Some people just need to write and write and write and write or create and create and create and then come back later to sift through everything and get the gold. Some people need to sit in front of a blank page for four hours allowing the thoughts to run over their heads like waves either waiting for one to stick. Waiting for inspiration to strike can be like waiting for the ocean to run out of water. Some people tell you to grab inspiration by the balls and make it your servant, but I wonder if that just bruises the inspiration and forces into a box of predetermined beliefs and desires.

I honestly can’t give a good answer for what to do about the creative process. I think that part of the sheer joy and sheer terror of being a creator is understanding the sometimes inspiration will hit you in the head and demand you to create something, whereas other times it hides in the corner and needs to be coaxed out and nurtured and allowed a break. This entire rant is probably going to break down to the idea that every single one of these articles becomes: Perhaps it’s better to work consistently at creating every day, it can be from some major project to something which never sees the light of day, but the important thing is to at least create something. I’ve heard it said that creativity is a muscle that needs to be exercised regularly, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true. I feel like every article I write turns into me philosophizing, and I guess deep down I’m not sad about that because I love to throw ideas at the wall of my brain and see if anything sticks. If something doesn’t then I pick it back up again and reform it and try throwing it again. I’ve realized that the inside of my brain probably looks like some random modern art, but it does all serve the purpose of creating some bigger idea perhaps.

It’s up to you as the creator to decide the stories you want to tell, or the paintings you want to make, or the drawings you want to draw, or the music you want to listen to. I would just say, try not to lose the joy of creating, because until you start creating again you’re not going to realize how much of a joy it actually is.
