Amiri Baraka and Allusion

Allusion is the act of stating things in an indirect way, so others are able to interpret what they believe had been said. This is an important element when trying to discuss heart wrenching topics. Amiri Baraka’s poem in memory of radio is a great example of using terms that are not similar to what is trying to be said. In this poem he talks about today’s wide growing technology in society. His depictions of each person he had talked about were all popular people from things such as radio shows. He then continues to speak about the truth behind the things being said. He said, “love is an evil word” (Baraka 340). This correlates between the radio and technology by making it clear about societies loss with connection to things that used to have meaning. He continues to talk about “Mandrakes hypnotic gesture of the week” (Baraka’s 340). This is an example of using the allusion of people’s mental health declining to represent technologies bad impact. The haze that is cultivating people is the radios making people lose touch with reality. Simple words such as I love you are more complicated than ever because of the amount it was thrown around during things going on.
