2018 iPhones naming chaos

The new iPhones are just around the corner, but we still don’t know for sure how they will be called. The latest and most likely naming combination seems to be «iPhone Xs» for the 5.8” updated iPhone X, «iPhone Xs Max» for the bigger but equally specced 6.5” one and «iPhone Xc» for the cheaper 6.1” LCD. But let’s see all the options and the reasons why they make sense.

This is the option that makes the most sense to me, but it has a big problem. It makes sense, because since «X» means «10», the next logic step would be to move to 11, especially to clear up the confusion I’ll talk about in the next paragraph. The issue is that releasing a 9 alongside an 11, the day after 9/11 is a terrible idea.

This seems like the most likely option at this point, but it has an issue as well. It’s likely because it would continue Apple’s traditional progression, with a cheaper and colorful «c» one. However the issue is that this would surely lead to people calling it «ex es», extra small.

Dropping the roman numeral «X» for a normal 10 would solve the issue presented above, and it would make sense because it’s not a special 10th anniversary edition anymore.

The argument here is that «Plus» doesn’t only mean bigger, but also more features, better specs or both. For example more RAM or a dual camera. Apparently that won’t be the case anymore this year, so dropping the «Plus» in favor of a «Max» would make sense.
