WHY DO SOME TAMILS WANT TO BOYCOTT THE FAMILY MAN SEASON 2?

After the success of the first season of The Family Man, the Manoj Bajpayee starrer Amazon Original series has dropped another thrilling new season on 4th June 2021. However, the show has landed into a controversy. The cause is the portrayal of the armed rebels as Tamils. They feel that their community and history is being wrongly presented and thus seek to boycott it.
Whenever we talk about tamil armed groups the first thing that comes to our mind is the LTTE- Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Now, to understand why some Tamils so strongly reacted against this show, we need to know about the history of Sri Lanka and who the LTTE were.

When the British took over Sri Lanka ( then Ceylon), they brought nearly 10 lakh Tamil labourers from India to work in coffee plantations. But when the plantations were destroyed due to the outbreak of an epidemic, they were made to work in tea plantations and were kept there permanently. Now, the rising Tamil population created a division between the Sinhalese and the Tamils.
Though there was not much violence between the two communities during the British rule there was a constant tension which only increased with time. In 1955 the Lankan PM announced that Tamil and Sinhalese will get equal status in the constitution. The Sinhalese protested because they felt buddhism and sinhalese should get more priority and validation as all these years their community had faced suppression at the British hands who prioritized the Tamils. In 1956, the next PM introduced Official Language Act making Sinhala the official language. This gravelly impacted the tamils, especially the Indian tamils. Their condition worsened after many Sinhalese started occupying and resettling on land owned by tamils. Due to this deepening rift between the two communities, the LTTE was formed in northern Sri Lanka. It was formed by tamil youths who intended to establish a separate country in Sri Lanka called Eelam.

The Sri Lankan government passed the Prevention of Terrorism Act after the formation of LTTE which gave the authorities power to arrest people without warrants and court hearings. There were frequent clashes between the LTTE and the government resulting in constant aggression and violence. These continued acts of violence convinced many tamils that only a separate country could make them safe. As a result many LTTE sympathizers increased which motivated the them to continue their missions.
The violence in Sri Lanka ended in 2009 after the army took control after defeating the LTTE leader Prabhakaran.
Only after the war ended did the people come to know about the numerous human rights violations committed by the government to win the war. Several incidents came into limelight about rape, torture and killing of children including LTTE chief Prabhakaran's 12 year old son. The Sri Lankan government neither took accountability nor solved the root cause of the war- discrimination between Sinhalese and Tamils.
The tamils in Sri Lanka as well as India even now are calling for accountability and justice for the brutalities the government resorted during war. This clearly shows in their recent support to the tamil cause on social media.
