Final Case Study

For my final case study I choose to Princeton University. Princeton is one of the 8 highly respected Private Ivy League in the United States and holds the largest endowment per student in the US. Princeton holds the alumni of high-profile government officials, national medal of science winners,abel prize winners, rhode scholars and many other namely scholastic accolades. With a school of such prestige and innovation, having a web interface that represents its notoriety is important for the university’s standards.

For this assignment, I choose to use my roommate to check out Princeton’s home page. Her first impression of the website was that it was very modern, compact and organized. She described the website as being an “open field” where the transparency of the different categories was impressive. She described the colors and visuals as pretty neutral which helped in not feeling too overwhelmed by the context of the page.

Tasks:

Main Problem:

The main problem of this excercise was that the website interface and context needed to accomodate language barriers that may occur if an international student is browsing the website.

Solution:

The solution I came down to was to add an “international students” column on the front page of the website with a “language” option as the first option for the drop-down menu. This enables international students to feel more seen and welcome towards the university, having the option be readily available for any student who’s having difficulties with the language barrier.

What I learned from this assignment is that inclusiveness is really important when making design decisions for national and international platforms. This website has a global audience and recognizing that as a designer can save a user’s fustration as well as be a difference maker in whether or not they explore or attend the university.
