There are 10 different kinds of number plates in India!!

This kind of number plate is used for private or non- commercial cars.

2. Yellow number plate with black lettering

This kind of number plate is used for commercial vehicles like taxis, cabs, trucks, etc. This kind of number plate has a different tax structure compared to white number plates and these vehicles have a commercial driving permit.

3. Black number plate with yellow lettering

This kind of number plate is used for vehicles registered as rental or self-driven. This number plate is also used for luxury hotel transport. These cars can ply as a commercial vehicle without the driver having to own a commercial driving permit.

4. Green number plate with white lettering

This number plate is unique to electric cars only. This is applicable to road-legal electric busses and other electric commercial vehicles (like Mahindra e20, Tata Tigor Electric).

5. Red number plate with white lettering

This number plate is issued as a temporary registration for a brand new vehicle and its validity is for 1 month only. Also, these number plates are issued for vehicles that are under testing conditions and also by car showrooms for test drive purposes.

6. Blue number plate with white lettering

This number plated is issued to a vehicle used by foreign delegates/ambassador. This plate uses the code of the country the diplomats belong to instead of the code of the state of India.

7. Black/ Green number plate with white lettering (Number plate with an upward-pointing arrow)

A vehicle bearing these number plates are a military vehicle registered Ministry of Defence in New Delhi. This registration plate has an upward pointing arrow at the first or after the second character, known as Broad Arrow. The digits succeeding the arrow denote the year in which the vehicle was procured. The next is the base code, followed by the serial number. The letter ending after the serial number indicates the class of the vehicle.

8. Red number plate with a star

This kind of number plate is used by army officers and the number of stars decides the ranking of the officer.

9. Blue number plate with a star

This kind of number plate is used by police officers and here also the number of stars decides the ranking of the officer.

10. Red number plate with gold emblem

The President of India and state governors travel in official cars without license plates. They have the Emblem of India in gold embossed on a red background plate.
