Is Great Literature a Thing of the Past?

I have a strange hobby. I don’t collect stamps, or display insects on a pin board behind a glass pane, or even have boxes full of baseball cards. I’m a writer at heart, which is what I tell people when they ask me about hobbies. That’s right. I love to write romance novels. Have I ever been published? That’s always the next question. The answer usually forms like a lump in my throat that I have to force out, ‘no’. You can see the unspoken reaction in their judgmental eyes, ‘you must not be very good at it then’. Actually, anyone (not just family and friends that feel obligated to fan my ego) that has ever had the opportunity to read my work is quite amazed about just how good it is and they have no problem telling me such with comments like, ‘that was great. I really didn’t expect it to be any good. I can tell people I know a real author. How did you think up all this stuff?’. Am I the author of the next great literary classic? I wouldn’t even dream of entertaining such a notion. But who is the author of the next great literary classic? Is there one on the horizon? What, exactly, defines a literary classic anyway?

So what is the most recent literary classic we can add to our library? The answer to this question is a matter of taste. You can google search the question and up pops a list of ‘modern’ classics available for the mere click of a button and entry of a credit card number. But seriously, what about today? What’s being published today? I’m a writer but I’m not published. I don’t believe I’ve written the next great classic and maybe that’s why I’m not published. You see, I could be published. There are quite a few ways to self-publish a book for absolutely no cost. Amazon offers this amazing gift! EVERYONE knows Amazon! EVERYONE can get published. However, I don’t want to self-publish through any median. I want an agent to read my work and be so enthralled with its entertainment value that they are willing to beat down the doors of every known publisher in existence until they find one that is willing to take the chance on a new author and her amazing work.
