Cityzen

When I was a young boy, I was dreaming about skyscrapers. In my imagination, a proper city has to have a lot of skyscrapers. And one day, I will rent an apartment on the top floor in one of those. Not sure any more why was it about the skyscrapers. I guess it had to do something with prosperity; things in that city have to be great if they have achieved that level. A skyscraper level. Well, in my city, we didn’t have any skyscrapers back then.

Now, I’m a bit smarter than back then. A see things from a different perspective, skyscrapers are not necessarily the holy grail when it comes to a great city. But my love for a city/cities is even bigger. If anybody asks me where do I live, I always reply with the name of the city. Never with the name of the country.

I don’t see a country to be of any importance any more. In my ideal future, there will be only cities. Countries won’t exist any more.

Well, my ideal future when it comes to living somewhere. The cities are above countries. Countries take care of peace and safety. That’s all. Cities function like companies. They take care of their finances [all the taxes are paid to the cities], health, transport, etc. They cooperate with local and global companies to fulfil the needs of their citizens. We are free to live in any city without getting stamps into our passports. There’s a sort of an accounting system in the place that automatically registers us into the city. It takes care of paying our tax to the city, getting healthcare, using transport and all the cities facilities. Just as we pay for any other service or products, we pay [tax] to live in a certain city.

Cities start to specialize. Some of them do their stuff to attract startups, other cities focus on artists, other on senior citizens. Cities work flippin hard to make their citizens happy. And happy citizens means more tax, more tax means more happy citizens. Just like any other business.

They are using smartphone applications to govern their cities. Every Monday, you’ll get a set of questions, just as any other citizen. You vote yes or no and there’s a small governing body tasked to execute the vote. You have full access to the city’s finances and see how your vote might affect it. You see how is your money used in real-time.

Of course, you can leave that city any time you wish and move to another city. Some cities banned cars. Other use only renewable energy. Other legalized certain drugs. Other have a load of parks. Focus on science. Technology. Childcare. Healthy food.

Although most of the cities are very different, they cooperate when it comes to food and resources. They are not competitors, they are friends. They focus on what they are good at and become highly specialised. This helps them to attract that certain type of people that will help them to get better and better in that.

Thanks to the fact that you as a citizen are fully responsible for the future of a city, you will live with like-minded people who share the same goals, and want to use similar tools to achieve them. It will be your city, and you will certainly feel that way. A good combination of responsibility combined with high livability. The same stuff is important to all citizens.

You can start your company in 5 minutes using a smartphone app. You’ll have public, super high speed, safe wifi. Cheap co-working spaces. Great amenities which will help you to turn off your ever working brain for a couple of hours. Non-progressive tax, everybody pays the same percentage regardless of your income. Various sports facilities to keep you fit. Freelance mental health coaches taking care of your mental sanity. And of course loads and loads of like-minded startup founders with a healthy amount of competition and even better cooperation.
