Court

Award winning Marathi film “Court” (2014), directed by Chaitanya Tamhane and starring Vira Sathidar, Vivek Gomber, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Pradeep Joshi among others.

Its a close look at the Indian legal system at the lower courts. Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar) a folk artist is arrested by the police for abetting in the suicide of a manhole worker. The worker died after listening to his songs asking manhole workers to commit suicide.

The case travels from one date to another with public prosecutor Nutan (Geetanjali Kulkarni) arguing for keeping him under arrest while defendant lawyer Vinay Vora (Vivek Gomber) pleading for bail on non existing charges and his failing health.

The movie exposes the hollowness of the court and police investigation system in a subtle manner. Shoddy work by police, arresting on fictitious charges, impossibility of the judicial system frustrate and defeat the best of human beings.

Narayan Kamble is given bail but arrested again on some other flimsy grounds and this time under a dangerous non bailable section. This shows that when the state wants to arrest somebody it has to merely cook up some part of the law to do it.

The unhurried languid pace of the movie in which Chaitanya Tamhane also shows the human side of the prosecutor, defendant lawyer and even the judge relaxing in his holidays, while the prisoners languish in jails for years on end.

Chaitanya Tamhane has written and directed his debut film admirably almost similar to Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho. Geetanjali Kulkarni and Pradeep Joshi have acted quite well in their respective roles. IMDB 6/10
