Getting Started

The process of downloading and installing Kali Linux or any Raspberry Pi distribution is pretty much the same. If you know how to download and write Raspberry Pi images, skip to the next section where we install Kali Linux.

Installing Kali Linux on the Raspberry Pi is relatively simple and easy to do. We will download Kali Linux from the kali.org website, write the disc image to a microSD card, and boot the Raspberry Pi using that microSD card with the Kali Linux operating system. You will need:

Now we need to write the Kali image to a microSD card that we will use to boot Kali Linux on our Raspberry Pi. This process uses a free and open-source utility for writing image files (kali-Linux-202.img) onto storage media to create live SD cards that we use to boot our Raspberry Pi. There are many utilities to write .img files to SD cards, we are using Etcher for this example. Etcher works on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

If you need Etcher, you can download and install it from their website:

Locate the Kali-Linux-202.img file in your Downloads folder and click Open.

Press the “Select target” button and find the microSD card where you are installing Kali Linux. After selecting your installation disk, click “Continue.”

Press the “Flash!” button to start the process of writing the .img to the microSD card. Once the process starts, flashing takes some time depending on the speed supported by the USB flash drive.

To avoid writing images on corrupted microSD cards, Etcher starts a process called validation. The process is successful when you see the following screen.
