Parenting and Censorship

When a musician writes lyrics to a song, it is pretty similar to writing a book. They are trying to portray either a story or a message in their own way. What they are trying to say should not be censored unless it is genuinely harmful to others. This is their career, the way they make money and live.

When an artist sits down to write lyrics, they tend to have an idea of what they or their fans want. When said artist gets started they shouldn't have to worry about what they say or the connotation of their words causing backlash from parents. The first amendment, the freedom of speech also pertains to musicians. They should be able to write what they want in their songs.

Parents most of the time have an idea of how they want to raise their children and most parents vary in that. Some parents view the music as harmful to their children. It is their job as parents to prevent them from hearing that. There are some parents who want their kids to listen to whatever they enjoy or what makes them happy. Censoring all music in the public would be unfair to those parents who don’t mind the explicit language or inappropriate nature of the music.

Ultimately it should be up to the artist and the producer to decide what is too much. It is the producers job to find the talent and decide if the music is good and should be put out to the public. If it is too inappropriate they can decide not to produce said music. If they work as professional producers it is probably safe to say that they are good judges of what's fine and what is too much. Before a producer works with an artist, they sign a contract. Most of the time the producer records with the artist and can recommend stuff like lyric changes, so if they think its too much, they can say something.

As previously stated, music should not be censored unless it is genuinely harmful to others. It is an art that should be shared how the creator intended. Parents wanting what's best for their children is never a bad thing. Over sheltering their children can be. No artist wants to see their creation get picked apart and censored.
