Tatum Tough

Coming into Thursday’s night game, I was pretty nervous. This is the first season I have followed the Celtics. Until recently, basketball never seemed to appeal to me. My nephew is an avid Celtics fan, and when I started to cheer for them, it gave us an excuse to talk more. If the Celtics don’t win game 6, our Celtics talk is gone until next season.

Throughout the playoffs, Tatum has started the games slow. Besides game 2, he started picking up the pace right after halftime. Last night was no different. His 1 point in the first two quarters didn’t phase me. Honestly, it gave me hope the Celtics bench was playing great once Tatum picked up the pace, we would be unstoppable.

By the end of the 3rd qt, I accepted that my nephew and I would not celebrate a championship in Boston this year. The Magic Tatum had in the second half during the playoffs was gone. The team, in general, in my limited knowledge of basketball, looked horrible; it looked like a team that was not hungry for victory.

Ah! Until four minutes left in the game. Then the Tatum train came to town. I was angry. How could a superstar not show up in the big moments?

How wrong was I? This was one of the most impressive sports performances. I love sports because you see human beings do amazing things physically and mentally. Last night’s last-ditch effort from Tatum was both — to have continually looked failure in the eye all game and not have your confidence waver at all is one of the most respectable attributes a player can have.

Thanks to Tatum’s resilience and thanks to the Celtics bench. My nephew and I will get one more game to talk about!
