This business is the perfect model of consistency and attractions

This is Kalin Uluave. Kalin has been on the island ever since he started school here at BYU Hawaii and found a way to call this home. Kalin is the owner of multiple different businesses but the one that he finds his most success and joy in is the SoDaBomb drink truck located in the Marketplace at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Kalin has found that in owning a business in the area always gives him new adventures and something to do even in his downtime.

Who is your ideal customer and how did you figure this out?

Being located in the Marketplace, there is so many turnover of people that come to the truck but will never return so it is really hard to keep them consistent if they are only here for a week or 2 weeks. Our ideal customers are locals and college students, with so many people that are looking to get drinks, having somewhere that knows them and knows what they like.

How much time is spent each week with customers and what is your advice in finding new customers?

Each of our regular customers will visit us about 3.5 times a month. When they come we will only spend about a minute or two with them before we have to help other customers. One thing that is really recommended with finding new customers and getting the old ones back is giving them a reason to come back. We do giveaways and promotions and paid ads to attract customers.

What tips do you have for me in learning more about my competitors and what I can do to be better than them?

Work for the competition. This might sound crazy, but if it is a brick and mortar store go and watch them. If it is online watch them. Just observe everything they are doing. There is so much that you can learn while watching your competitors and seeing what they are doing good and what they can improve on.

What do you feel is the importance of marketing in your business?

Marketing is everything, there is so much that can be done with marketing in both attracting new customers and keeping regular customers. If you have a good marketing strategy you will be able to find success, people want to feel like you are putting in work for them and by them seeing your product elsewhere will make them think they need to come back.

In starting a business, what is the thing that you would recommend the most?

Find something that you love to do. You don’t want to have to put in so many hours at running a business if it isn’t even something that you enjoy doing. If you are committed and love what you are doing, you are going to find so much more success because you will want to go to work everyday.
