Trusting Old Technology Saved Me

Prompt #7: Rapidly Changing Technology

I take pride in being bilingual.

I am conversant in paper and digital, choosing the tool that works best to accomplish what I set out to do.

My best thinking, wondering, and problem-solving comes with walking. Sprawled on huge blank pages, insights take shape, growing into structure when I continue onto sticky index cards. Finally, the ultimate story is typed into computer or dashed onto phone, revised with jolts of genius and laughter.

If a story does not make me laugh or cry, it’s not worth writing.

As paper planners yielded to digital tools, I followed. I missed leather-bound paper that made my fingers sing, but I wanted the best tools possible.

Along with many others, I boomeranged back to paper within a year. After dumb glitches, fails, and updates that didn’t work, nifty keen cool tech toys landed in the junk drawer. Reluctantly, we confided to our tribe we felt like dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs still know how to dance.

With my leather-bound planner, I met commitments, dreamed wild ideas, and cherished my wondering.

On a fateful day when my partnership with my planner was challenged, I shared coffee with a troubled loved one, holding hands over unthinkable betrayal and murmuring over world-class coffee cake.

The café was packed, but we did not yield our table to sidestepping impatience. More coffee was enjoyed. My planner welcomed wobbly-mind maps and wild ideas.

Two hours later, we left the café for reality. Problem laid out, solutions developed, the world no longer looked bleak, cold and harsh.

Four hours later, I was back at that café. This time I was frantic, fearful, approaching an epic meltdown.

Our conversation had been so intense I lost track of who I am in real life, the woman with the planner clasped to her heart.

The café was quieter now, with fewer customers vying for comfy armchairs and open tables.

Fear clutching my heart, I whooped out loud. My leather-bound planner was exactly where I left it.

Protected by a low-tech force field, no crumbs or spills ruined its immaculate perfection.

Our plans, my secrets, the facts of my life, and story nuggets were safe.

My phone is current, my work done on-line, but my trusty leather-bound planner is my faithful companion.
