Twenty Years

A high school reunion and retirement story

The invitation arrived by mail, back in the days before email. It was from one of my two high schools — the one I didn’t graduate from. The one I left halfway through junior year.

You are invited — yada, yada. I received a similar invitation from the high school where I did graduate and threw it in the trash. I wasn’t there long enough to care much about the school or my classmates. Besides, that school was more than 1,200 miles away. Sure wasn’t making that trip to see people who probably wouldn’t remember me.

At first, I threw the second invitation away, too, thinking it was sent to me by mistake. That school was small enough that the event planners would know I didn’t graduate with them. Most of us attended all grades of school together. The invitation was obviously a mistake.

Before the trash went out, I retrieved the green and gold envelope (school colors), filled out the attending information, and mailed it back — all before I called my sister and asked if my then-husband and I could visit the week of my high school reunion. All before I could really think about my decision to attend.

Other than my two best friends, a guy and a girl who later became engaged (then unengaged when he announced he was gay), I hadn’t kept up with anyone in the Virginia county where I was raised. Sometimes my sister shared tidbits she knew about my old acquaintances, but that was it. Now, I was returning to see those school chums again. I had no idea what to expect.

Three months later, my husband and I drove 625 miles to my sister’s house 10 miles from where she and I grew up. Two days later, we headed to my 20-Year High School Reunion.
