You slept, I lay awake
— tossing, turning, wondering

You drank it all up, I withheld
— someone had to chart the way back home

You flowered, I withered
— fading into the background, a backdrop to your life

You watched the game, I counted the lines on my palm
— counting the minutes, the hours, the days

You ate your dinner ravenously, I starved myself again
— missing my hunger, saddened at the demise of one more thing

You watched yourself in the mirror, while I watched you
— the new watch, the new shoes, the new you

You spent hours on your phone, I slowly forgot who I used to be
— my new reality not even hinting at the buoyancy of the old me

You turned away, I turned away
— implicitly signing a pact to close the book on “us” now

You stayed, I walked away
— not even looking back at you, standing between the pillars of the courthouse.
