5 Ways to Prepare for Fall

Self-declared fall expert Maggie Durling gives you the inside scoop on the simple things you can do to enjoy Reno in the fall.

Fall has officially come to Reno. The expectations of the season can be a lot but I am here to guide you through a couple of things you can do to prepare.

The temperature has started to cool and the leaves are changing colors, which means it’s time to admit that it is fall. With this new season comes a lot of responsibility. It usually means a new school year is underway. It’s also the last days of the year before the official holiday season starts, and with the popularity of social media, you have to look the part.

I have been a fall lover for as long as I can remember. The weather is usually perfect, the heat of the summer dies down but the bitter cold of the winter has not yet hit.

If this changing season overwhelms you or you just don’t understand the fascination, here are a few tips to help you prepare for the months ahead.

Reno has amazing places to see the shift in the season. You can walk along the river and see the leaves begin to change right in front of your eyes.

Fall clothing is usually characterized by a combination of summer and winter clothing. So, you can wear a combination of the jeans it has been too hot to wear and your favorite T-shirt without needing to cover it with a sweatshirt. Or you can pull out your favorite sweater and pair it with your favorite sundress. Pair these with your favorite pair of boots and your favorite book and you will look like you walked straight out of any rom-com movie set.

2. Let’s Feast!

While the official start to the season may be the autumnal equinox, this year it was September 22, die-hard fan knows the real official beginning of the season is the day Starbucks releases fall seasonal drinks. This day marks the beginning of all things pumpkin spice. You may be rolling your eyes and hating on this fan favorite. All I have to say to you is it’s not going anywhere so you might as well take a sip.

Let’s not forget the other reason for the season… Trader Joe’s. The second they stock their fall seasonal items you have to pounce. They don’t restock, so after those initial days on the shelf, they are gone till the next year. So, if you are anything like me you will get down to the store and buy as many boxes of Pumpkin Pancake Mix as you can so that by the time you run out it is time to buy it again.

3. Light it up

There are a lot of things that will help to set the mood for the season. Whether you are a spooky decorator or all about the pumpkins lighting is essential. Make sure you pick up your favorite fall candle scents so that every time you walk through the door you are reminded of how amazing this time of year is. Candles can also be used to create the spooky mood of Halloween, so whether it is inside your Jack-O-Lantern or just to keep the mood somber, make sure you get some tea lights.

4. Prepare Your Plants

Winter is coming. Your plant babies may need to have a little more care. Make sure to keep up with your local weather station and watch when the first freeze is coming. You may need to just pull out a towel or some blankets to cover your plants overnight or bring them inside to keep them alive in the cold.

5. Get Cozy

We all have our favorite blankets. Well it is now time to pull them out. There is nothing better than spending a cold fall day under a cozy blanket. The perfect addition to this day is your favorite pair of socks, a warm drink, and your favorite book.

Most importantly don’t take yourself too seriously! After a year and a half spent inside our homes and isolated, find happiness where you can. Do the silly things that you haven’t done since you were a kid, like carve a pumpkin or make sure to walk on all the crunchy leaves. So cuddle in, turn on your favorite spooky movie, or start Gilmore Girls all over again because this time of year will be over before you know it, and winter will set in. Remember there is no shame in the pumpkin spice game.
