Another Year Goes By

I look into the mirror and my skin is starting to wear.

Combing through the strands I find a grey hair.

My body aches, not as limber as it used to be.

The past, present, and future colliding right in front of me.

Time is a paradox and one that can’t be slowed.

In a blink of an eye we begin to erode.

We’re constantly reminded that looks fade away.

Yet we continue pretending each and every day.

Much like the maintenance on our every day car.

We neglect ourselves until we’ve gone too far.

So what happens when it’s all said and done?

When we can’t rewind the clock and can no longer run.

Is it truly something to worry about?

Or just another fear that fills our head with doubt?

Maybe instead we should just enjoy the moment.

Forget the inevitable as we can’t control it.

I look up and the stranger still stares back at me.

Wondering what exactly my next move will be.

I smile and begin to walk away.

And as I look back, I say, “Hey old man, Happy Birthday.”
